Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?: Yes. Every level, every lesson, every exercise and every listening activity is free. There is no paid tier and nothing is held back. The goal of the project is education and accessibility rather than monetisation.
Which level should I start at?: If you have never studied German, start at A1.1. If you already handle the present tense, der/die/das and the accusative comfortably, A2.1 is usually right. If you can use the Perfekt and the dative without thinking, start at B1.1. You can change level at any time in your settings without losing progress.
Do I have to do the levels in order?: Within a level, yes: a lesson unlocks when the previous one is passed at 70% or better, because the material genuinely builds. Between levels you can jump wherever you like — the level you choose in settings is where your dashboard picks up.
Where does the audio come from?: Listening material is spoken by the German speech engine already built into your browser, at a speed matched to the level. That means no downloads, no hosting costs and no paywall. If your browser has no German voice installed, the transcript and questions still work; on Windows you can add one in Settings under Time & Language → Speech.
How does the vocabulary review work?: It uses SM-2 spaced repetition with a short learning ladder in front of it. A new word is shown again after ten minutes, then eight hours, then at growing intervals based on how easily you recall it. Once a card reaches a 21-day interval it counts as known. Getting one wrong drops it back to the ten-minute step, so words you struggle with come back quickly.
Does it work on a phone?: Yes. The layout is mobile-first: the sidebar collapses into a bottom navigation bar, exercises use tap targets sized for thumbs, and drag-and-drop exercises accept taps as well as drags.
Can I use the interface in my own language?: The interface is available in English and Arabic, and Arabic renders right-to-left throughout. Vocabulary and example sentences carry translations into both languages.
What happens to my progress if I stop for a month?: Nothing is lost. Your completed lessons, vocabulary deck and XP stay exactly as they were. Your daily streak resets to zero, and any vocabulary that fell due while you were away will be waiting in the review queue.
How is XP calculated?: Every correct answer earns the exercise its XP value, and passing a lesson for the first time adds the lesson bonus on top. Repeating a lesson you have already passed pays a reduced rate, so XP reflects learning rather than grinding.
Can I contribute content?: Yes — lessons, grammar explanations, vocabulary, listening scripts, translations and accessibility fixes are all welcome. Content lives in typed seed files, so writing a lesson means writing a data object rather than application code.
